Arriving in Atlanta

I'm here in Atlanta, site of the RWA National conference. To get here, first I needed to leave LA so let's backtrack briefly...

Where are all the cabs in LA? It's a big place, yes? There should be heaps, yes? Yet I waited fifteen minutes at the airport on arrival without one cruising by. I noticed I was the only person waiting for a cab, which I found slightly odd. Does everyone arriving in LA have a pickup or a rental car? Odd.

Leaving, again, not a cab to be found for over 15 minutes. I need not have worried since the cabbie that did arrive made up the slack by driving like a freaking maniac all the way to the airport. So, when I say I amde it to Atlanta safely, just know that I am truly grateful to the Lord and St Jude and whoever else made that possible.

The cab ride was fast, the check-in not so much. Short queue, not a crowd, and yet it took over an hour to crrp through check-in and security. Which was okay, except that ate up all the time allocated for brunch and the airline only served snacks (and by snacks, I really do mean snacks) despite it being a 4.5 hr flight. Anyhoo, by the time I arrived at my Atlanta hotel at 10.30pm (I left my LA hotel at 11am) I was regretting my no-breakfast, brunch-at-airport decision.

In brief:

* hotel had no standard rooms left so had to upgrade me to club level. Nice.

* there was a girl on my flight with a dog in her handbag. I didn't know you could take your dog flying with you. Interesting.

* my dh told me that Atlanta airport was the world's busiest. He didn't tell me it was the longest.

* when faced with the choice: train or walk to terminal, I should not have thought: a walk would be nice after so much sitting around.

* bleeding blisters are not the best way to start conference.

Oh, Bron, I hear you on maniacal cabbies. The worst I ever had was in Manila. I'd been shopping in Makati (an interesting experience when I'm a large almost 6-footer and the rest of the population just about reached my navel) and negotiated for a taxi outside the shops. It was a few days after the funeral of the Princess of Wales and the cabby said "You hear about Princess Diana?" and my friend and I said "Yes, very sad." The cabbie said "No seatbelt, she die!" then took off like a bat out of hell through seven lanes of traffic on a four lane highway! I will NEVER forget that ride.

Take care of those blisters, Bron. We need you dancing (or at least be able to hear about you dancing ::wink::)

So sorry to hear about your near death cab experience Bron! I've heard everyone drives or is driven[stars]in L.A. and they wonder why there is so much smog, lol.

The biggest airport I've been to was Salt Lake City[a big hub out west] and we got out at one gate and our connecting flight was at the clear other end.It was horrible,we made the mistake of thinking we would eat at the food area closest to our gate and we went past tons of places, finally our gate was in sight and we asked this guy who was working at this little food stand if there was anymore food sellars down towards our gate,he says yeah you keep going down and you will come to it. We went quite a ways and then we came to some construction and then an elevator so we went down thinking it must be down there.Surprise the jerk lied and it was more construction! We were so mad, because we would have ate at his stand and had plenty of time.We were so pissed at the jerk my sister said she would go back and find us some food,by the time she got back they were loading and we ate cold nasty Burger King my least favorite of the burger fastfood joints.Wow sorry about the long airport horror story guys, I just thought I'd vent, lol.

I'm sorry you will be starting the conference all blistered up Bron.I've never heard of compeed either?
