The Best Rock Band in the World

I interrupt my self-imposed blog celibacy to report on our trip this weekend to see Coldplay, a special treat to celebrate my husband's birthday (a Big 0 landmark one.) I chose a nice hotel which turned out to be an excellent choice, since they acknowledged the specialness of the occasion with complimentary champagne. Nice.

For those who don't know, we live on a farm some distance from any of the big cities. Sydney is slightly closer and when we head to the city that's where we usually head. This time the Melbourne concert dates suited better and we discovered that the drive is easy and hassle-free due to a (relatively) new freeway. At least it would have been hassle-free if not for a road closure and detour 3 blocks from our hotel. Three short blocks too, I kid you not! We'd just finished congratulating each other on not getting lost, on making such good time. I was dreaming of the champagne bar as a nice relaxing precursor to the concert. Ha. What I hadn't counted on was arriving in Melbourne as the crowd was exiting the Saturday afternoon football. Those last 3 blocks took almost an hour and soaked up all my champagne bar time.

Moving right along to the concert...

Coldplay is THE best rock band in the world, I won't even debate that with you. Their set on Saturday night included most of their biggest and most recognizable songs. Yellow was accompanied by the release of huge yellow balloons filled with confetti. Oh, and we had GREAT seats, which I have to mention because of the hassle in getting them. Well worth it.

Chris Martin owned the stage with his energetic and charismatic presence. He's like the energiser bunny unleashed--a long-limbed, enormously flexible bunny at that. He'd be a whiz at yoga. When he wasn't bounding around and contorting himself into impossible angles, he was hunched over the keyboards or tearing through the crowd to the top of the stadium.

I could go on...and on and on, but like holiday photos I think concert stories fall into the you-had-to-be-there basket. I *was* there and I'm sooooo glad I was. There's nothing quite like the rush of a live show or the whoomp-whoomp-whoomp of amplified bass thumping through your blood. Makes a tired old soul feel young and alive and energized...which is exactly what I needed, with only 3 weeks until I leave for Atlanta and a stack THIS high of work to do beforehand.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear about your favourite bands and/or live show experiences and/or what you've done lately that's excited or energized you. Anyone done anything/seen anything/read anything really fun lately?

I'm visiting my sister on the Georgia coast and yesterday we went to the beach to soak up some rays and maybe see the Shuttle launch. Unfortunately it was scrubbed due to weather but it rescheduled for today.

I did see a launch back in the mid-90's and it was up close and personal. My DH worked for NASA back then and we were going to be in Florida on business. So he called a few folks and got us tickets in the VIP viewing area. There are just no words to explain the palpable tension in the air prior to the launch and the "WOW" feeling when you see that big bird lift off and soar. There's a popping and crackling sound that works its way from the launch pad across the river to the stands and there's also somewhat of a shockwave that you feel. I'm just so glad we got to share that with our boys. It's something not many folks get to do and it's something that may not happen much longer.

Reading? I just finished ELEVEN ON TOP by Janet Evanovich and am ready to start TWELVE SHARP. Those are always such fun!

We[me,my sister & daughter]are going to Seattle on Saturday to meet my cousins and their family for dinner and the Seattle Mariner's game. We go to the "BIG" city at least once a summer to see the Mariner's.[hopefully we will go in Aug]It's great that this time we will enjoy it with more family. It's not as far as you have to travel Bron, but it takes planning because of the ferries and scheduling.

I hope you got a lot done on your hiatus from the blog, we missed you. It sounded like a great time w/your husband. I like Coldplay too. I haven't been to a concert in a long while. One of the more memorable one's was Lalapalooza, it's first year it was created. There was so many people it was overwhelming at first. There was 6 main bands[the best were; Pearl Jam,Soundgarden, and Red Hot Chili Peppers] and whole bunch of side bands on other stages.

Bron, glad you came out to play!

My hubby went to see the Rolling Stones recently - before whathisname fell out the coconut tree - and he said it was simply fab! Nickleback did the warmup bit-that made my son wish he'd been there.

Years ago I saw Queen in action--they were fan-tas-tic, Freddy Mercury rocks. Still adore their music. Missed UB40 this year, and I'm really sorry about that.

See you in Atlanta...I'll be screaming when they call out your name!

Good grief! It's been years since I went to a live concert (can you tell by the cobwebs hanging around me?) Last great ones I went to would've been Police, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and I'll never forget a Mi-Sex concert I went to in my teens (featuring many of their Space Race album songs)... oh dear, now I feel ancient.

Dena, I went to a Mariners' game about fifteen years ago (creak, creak--yep, thems my bones.) We had great seats in the King Dome (it's been demolished now, right?) and Paul Newman threw in the first ball of the game. Had these Kiwi's fascinated, that's for sure.

I absolutely hate admitting this but I've never been to a live concert :(
(apart from Tom Jones in Vegas about 12 years ago but I don't count that!)
Would love to see Robbie Williams live as I think he'd inspire me for the next decade :)

Yes the King Dome is gone Yvonne with a big implosion,it was cool to see it fall to dust and so fast! They play in a beautiful stadium now with a movable roof[which we need here in the NW]Thank goodness the guys play better now than they did 15 years ago, they have always been entertaining though, lol.

I haven't been to any concerts lately. I used to go to some when I was in high school (20years ago). We went to see Phil Collins, Kim Mitchell, Pink Floyd. I think the best concert we went to was Alice Copper. It was New Year's Eve and our seats were second row from the front. The only disappointing thing was that he ended the show at 11 (I guess he wanted to party for New Year's) but we walked down to Nathan Phillips Square and we got to see some other bands for free like Luba, Ronnie Hawkins, I can't remember who else.
