Beach vs Mountain

You know that question in quick interviews: are you a beach or a mountain person? I used to be beach. Absolutely, without question. Living in inland Australia, the family holiday was always to the beach. Usually a little coastal town named Bateman's Bay, with an occasional treat to a Sydney beach suburb such a Bondi or Avalon (I remember those 2 family holidays most vividly.) I loved everything about those beach holidays, despite the inevitable sunburn and peeling. Obviously, given my age, I grew up in the era before slip-slop-slap. We used to sunbathe with baby oil on our skin to enhance the frying, for Pete's sake.

In recent years we haven't done the beach holiday and I'd started to think I might have grown into a mountain person. We've had some awesome summer experiences in cooler, un-sandy locales. But today we're heading off for a few days at the beach and I realise that I can't wait. I DO still love the beach experience. The cool wet sand squelching beneath my feet. The salted air. The crash of surf against my legs. Fish and chips and ice-cream in cones. Reading the daily paper every day and glossy trash mag's and big thick paperbacks.

I need to go pack some sun-screen and reading material. I sure do hope the gelato at Manly Wharf is as good as I remember. I will let you know when I return.

In the meantime, what's your favourite summer holiday? Beach or mountain or something else entirely?

My favourite summer holiday is at the beach. I love the sunshine, the soothing sound of the waves, the beauty of the ocean and the expanse of the beach. Nothing can top that. Mainly because I live in the mountains and love the change.

I'm definitely a beach holiday person combined with camping, so far. There's nothing quite like drifting off to sleep with the distant sound of the waves kissing the shore echoing in your ears.

Mind you, I've never had a mountain holiday so it would be interesting for the contrast.

I love the beach. Since I first had the experience of a holiday at the ocean it has been a dream of mine to have a cottage at the beach. To walk along the shore, and enjoy the clear blue skies, the intense sunshine and the soft sand beneath your feet, there is nothing quite like it. relaxing and memorable.

Anything were I do as least as possible and I'm very comfortable. It could be snowing and you'd be snowed in for weeks on end or its hotter than ever outside and its like that for days on end. It could be either or for me as long as I'm comfortable and doing the least as possible (like curled up on the couch with a great book or good movie).

I prefer the mountains, the countryside, I love greenery, and thankfully there's plenty to go around here in Ireland

The beach has always had this wonderful allure for me. I try to spend at least some part of the summer at the seashore since it is the only time during the year that I can avail myself of this beauty. One week during the summer we rented a beautiful condo with a large deck overlooking the ocean. Will never forget that week.

I grew up within spitting distance of the beach, so I think that I count as a "beach person" all the way down. Moving to the midwest was a jolt because there wasn't an ocean nearby. But then I discovered "rivers" and all became right with the world again. Rivers have great potential, too. And they have direction. I find that something worth exploring.

Then again, my grandparents ranched in the mountains of Colorado and my mom was born in the mountains of Montana, and now two of our sons live there, and we go back all the time. So there are definitely mountains in my life as well!

Can I be both,Bron? Please???

Course you can, Anne! As a Gemini I'm all for BOTH!!

Loving all your comments. Ellie, you're so lucky to live with the majesty of mountain and Maria you have Ireland. Lovely!

Jo, I'm laughing at your "wherever you do least" comment. That's my idea of a holiday, too!

Yvonne -- what about Tahow? (Perhaps 2-3 days doesn't count as a holiday?)

Alissa and Traveler, my week at the beach is filled with everything you mentioned. And the gelato IS as fine as I recall. Esp the caramelised fig. Yum.

Hmmm, I forgot about Squaw Mountain... how could I?

Mind you, we did spend alot of time away from the mountain and around the lake.

I think if it comes to it, I'm a water holiday person as opposed to a land holiday person. I don't mind if I'm not by the sea, I just love being near water (and I'm not talking about rain either!) LOL!

Beach. I've been to the beach once and I loved it and would love to go back.

I am definitely a mountain type of person. I definitely enjoy cool weather rather than hot.
