Idol Thoughts

I haven't watched American Idol for several seasons, probably since it was last shown free to air. This year it's showing on sub TV and I'm watching and I'm enjoying. Not always the performances, but Simon.

Here's the deal: I'm going to blog a few random thoughts on the show, but I reckon we're watching AFTER you guys in America so no spoilers, okay? (Not that I always watch the results show because it's like ten minutes worth watching stretched and dragged out.)

The 11 Show: Beatles two weeks in a row--what were they thinking? Not that I don't love the fab four, but are they still relevant to kids in their teens and twenties??? My teens and twenties don't think so, and while last week's shows featured some pretty cool interpretations this week was always going to be about 2nd choices. No surprise that the 2 best performances were from artists who disappointed last week (David A and Syesha) and had to do better this time.

Simon, you were right: Jason really is all about the goofy charm, isn't he? I find myself smiling along with him. He has that kinda face.

Simon, you were wrong: Carly, Blackbird. I loved her simple, subtle, restrained delivery...but then I've never been a fan of the big, belted-out ballad.

Looking good: loved Syesha's dress, but what was Ramiele wearing? ==>>

I'm loving: Brooke and Michael.

I'm over: Amanda but I reckon it might be Kristy who goes home. A pity because she seems a real sweetie. I like her voice but she doesn't have the hey-look-at-me stage presence of some of the others.

I don't watch AI--or any other reality TV for that matter--so I'll just wave and say hi.

*wave* Hi!

I'm loving Brooke too but here comes the sun wasn't her best. I never really watched the show either but like some the girl in Minnesota that I IM with watches so we kinda watch together and can kind of comment on singers as they sing.

Bron, I'm not sure how far behind we are here in NZ, I think last weekend they screened the shows where they whittled the boys down to 6 and the girls down to 6...not sure, haven't really been watching. But, what we have been watching is SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, AUSTRALIA. What an amazing show filled with amazing talent (and a few rather amazing egos.)

BTW, I'm not here, I'm really writing pages and pages of my ms.

Nope, not here at all...

Kristy is pretty, but she doesn't have a great voice. I thought she should have been sent home last week. Can't believe she's in the top ten. I'm a big Michael and David Archuleta fan. Are people in Australia rooting for their hometown boy, Michael? Jason is goofy, but very lovable.

I watch Idol every week. My fav's are Michael, Brooke, and Carly. I usually don't watch reality TV but kind of got hooked on this one. I don't like David's little goofy smile.

Waving back to you all, whether AI fans or not.

Christa, what a fun way to watch a reality show. Kinda like your own AI party across state and country lines. Love it! I agree that abt Brooke and Here Comes The Sun. She is definitely more at home with an instrument. Loved both You're So Vain and Let It Be.

Yvonne, we had the Final 11 this week so sounds as though you are 2 weeks behind. It's nice that we'll just half a day or so behind (when I catch Wed/Th rather than the Sunday encore.) I actually feel like I'm current.

I avoided the crack that is SYTYCD from the outset. I knew I would get hooked on that one and I can only manage one TV reality show obsession at a time. When it started I was watching ANTM which has since finished. Fox has started promoting, heavily, a new series of Australia's Next Top Model, starting in April. Must resist, must resist.

Bron, who is writing the scene that had to be rewritten and is not here, either

Jane, not a great voice but a nice one. She's not found her niche. I think she'd do well with the country edge, but that's not easy with Beatles songs. She doesn't have a lot of confidence, which the Idol experience probably isn't helping, but I like her lack of pretension and preciousness.

Virginia, same favourites as me! Snap!! :-) Worried about Carly after this bottom 3 finish. (Watched the results show last night; you can all now officially talk about it, LOL!)

Michael is getting a bit of attention over here and I'm sure will get more if he keeps progressing. (We can't vote, BTW, case you were wondering.)

I think Kristy has a habit of turning all her songs a little country. If she was to sing Shania Twain she would probably blow the roof of that place. Right now though she isn't showing much versitility

You know, I wonder about the versatility thing. They need it because of the nature of the competition, yet isn't the aim of the show to find a recording artist who will sell a truckload of records? As a rock artist, a country singer, R&B or whatever. But then, they have to be versatile to get through all the rounds. Must be really stressful when they have to choose and perform a song in a genre they know nothing of or, worse, hate.
