RITAs and Idols and Spaceage Swimsuits

Three disparate subjects it would seem, but they do share a common link. Competition. I'm not sure how or why competition fits into pursuits such as writing and singing. I know there's no definitive: this book is better than that book, or this singer is better than that. It all depends on who is reading or listening and in the case of competition, who is judging.

My mixed feelings don't stop me hanging out for the announcement of RITA finalists each year. These are the books which gained the highest scores from the fellow RWA members who read them in first-round judging. That's five readers, five opinions, five scores. But because it's a peer-judged contest, we authors do love RITA.

I entered books from 2002-2006, got some truly horrendous scores and then in 2006 I was the world's luckiest writer and a triple finalist. I decided it could never get any better and so I haven't entered since. Yet yesterday, when the calls to finalists went out, I had the jitters something fierce. Probably on behalf of all my mates who'd entered. Congratulations to all the finalists, with a special Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi-oi-oi shout-out to Kelly Hunter, Anne Gracie and Anna Campbell, and to Golden Heart finalists Tracey O'Hara and Helene Young.

Have you checked the finalists? Any books you read there that you read and loved last year?

This week I've been glued to the nightly coverage of the Australian swim championships, also our Olympic trials. We have top swimmers, no question, but they've been swimming Very Fast Indeed this week in their high-tech swimsuits. Apparently they were partially designed by NASA. Apparently they cost $600 each. Apparently in the past 39 days, 13 world records have been broken, 12 by swimmers wearing them. My husband says they should be banned. I say they should be made available to all swimmers, not just the countries that can afford them, so in Beijing everyone is on the same playing field...or pool.

Between RITA and the swimming, I almost forgot about Idol last night. I missed Ramiele but caught the rest. Loved Michael's Queen tribute but then loved David Cook's interpretation of Billie Jean even more. He's not my favourite personality but props to him for crafting the old classics into contemporary versions.

I'm worried that Carly might go. Really did not like her last night, horrid song at the best of times and she looked soooo tense that I couldn't watch her. Worryworryworried about her surviving. Do I look as tense as she did?

Congrats to the RITA finalists! And Golden Heart finalists as well!
As to the swim records... wow wow wow wow. 12 world records is a lot! Interesting about the swimsuits... and I agree - either get rid of them, or make them available to everyone. I always feel bad for the tiny country that only sent 1-2 athletes, and the government had to pool money for them to be able to go... and they get whomped. Sometimes, the athlete is applauded just for finishing, which is nice. Sometimes they're jeered for taking so long, which is awful. Sometimes, they win, which is amazing.
I'm worried about countries that can't afford to do things "their own way" - I read an article that said how pumped up the food in China is with steroids - I think they wrote if someone ate the food there, they wouldn't pass the drug tests. That's... sad in and of itself, but competition wise not fair at all.

Wow, those RITA results are great. I notice this year there are quite a few double finalists but any triples...nope (or at least not that I've seen.) Just goes to prove how much you rock!

Bron, I feel the same as you about the suits. They should be available to everyone so the playing field (or pool) is even. Some athletes have a greater skill than others, which is evidenced in the placings, some athletes may have a better performance on the day than others, which is evidenced in the placings. Let their skill and their performance on the day be what tells the Olympic gold story. Not what they're wearing. Heck, make 'em all swim nekkid!

And re Idol...would you stop it please! You're making me want to watch it every week now, and I don't have TIME! LOL!

I love Idol. Maybe Carly will make a come back next week. I think Michael is about my favorite.

Michael is one of my favorites, too. I really like David A. He's been the most consistent. David Cook has done well the past few weeks, but he's not my favorite personality either.

I think a part of likes Carly but a part does because to me Idol is about discovering new talent and she's already had a record contract

Limecello, agree about the level playing pool. Has to be the same for everyone, although I reckon this happend across many Olympic sports. Take cycling for example and the technology involved in bike design. There has to be advantage there. And don't get me started on the level playing field of performance enhancement. :-/ Bron

LOL, Yvonne. Nope no triples. :-)

I just took a moment there to think about the swimmers swimming nekkid. Would be great for ratings, although not so much for times. Have you noticed how these new suits pull everything in to complete streamline?

Fellow Idol (and Michael) fans: he looked so much more confident and comfortable this week, didn't he? Perhaps because of the material.

And David A: what did you think of his song choice and Simon's comments? Was he implying that a 17-y-o wouldn't know or appreciate John Farnham? (Who is an Aussie music icon, BTW, but it did surprise me to hear his song on AI.)

Christa, I agree to a point...but there are record contracts and record contracts and a show like AI gives them a chance at the big time. I also think these waters and muddied slightly these days because loads of singers/songwriters have MySpace pages with their songs available to download. It's another world to the good ole days. *g*
