How A Romance Novel Cover Is Made

Dorchester author, Marianne Mancusi, is a TV producer for her day job, working on a show called Better TV. Recently she and Better TV partnered with Dorchester Publishing to do a story on how a romance novel cover is created, from concept to final product. Haven't watched it myself yet (need to connect some speakers that work because it's really not the same without sound!) but I will. I'm always fascinated by behind-the-scenes stuff and thought I may just share that fascination with some others out there. If you do watch it, let me know what you think.

Hi Bron, I haven't seen it but I know you as the author get some input in your covers, whether they take your suggestions or not, you find out later. How do you feel about that? I feel the writer should have more say, I especially hate it when the heroine has black hair on the cover but blond hair in the book.

Hi Bron,
That was really neat! Thanks for sharing the link. I really liked how the -ack I can't remember now - the artist? Sometimes got to read the manuscript before the shoot, so she knew what would work. A+ for when that happens. I know some authors don't get much say on their covers, so I don't hold discrepancies against them, but I do like it when the cover matches the characters. Or, to get rid of that "problem" altogether, when people aren't on the cover.

Hi, gals. I must admit that it grates on every last one of my nerves when the most basic of character descriptions isn't adhered to (e.g. hair colour and length, ethnicity, approx age.) I'm talking as a reader because with my books (thinking, thinking...) I think I've been exceedingly lucky.

I'm also thinking that I need to see them all in one spot, to recall how lucky I have been as well as to recall which have been most spot on to my description. I'm thinking A Tempting Engagement. We did this for the Diamonds Down Under books (take a look at the website's new homepage if you haven't already) and now I have a yen to see my covers like this, all in the one "poster" like document. I'm off to do that right now and will report back.

Hi Bron,

That was a nice summation of a long process. What is ironic for me is that I often point out the exact series of books that they showed (C. L. Wilson's Taren Soul books)to others as an example of cover/story disconnect! I guess my mind's eye has a different view.

A poster of your covers would look great!

Hi K2. *waving* How interesting. I still haven't had a chance to connect speakers and watch the segment, but since I haven't read the Wilson books I dare say I would not have noticed. Vedy interesting.
