Weekend Reading: Spiders and Freaks

Would you believe that I am willingly spending my weekend with spiders? Oh, yes, indeedy. At RWA San Francisco, I was lucky enough to secure myself a signed hardcover of Lisa Gardner's SAY GOODBYE. I love her writing, her characterisation, her suspenseful plotlines, so much that I put aside my fears. This one is particularly scary, suspenseful, spidery -- the stuff of nightmares -- but it has me in its grips and I can't put it down.

Is there an author whose books you can't resist even though they're scarier, hotter, more shocking, longer, shorter, or about subject matter you would normally drive through three counties to avoid?

Hi Bron! I'm having a mini obsession with Dennis Lehane at the moment after reading Gone, Baby, Gone. Great stuff! I love Lisa Gardner too.

I can never resist a Linda Howard novel. Other authors are Kay Hooper, Lisa Gardner, and for eerie creepiness and impending doom Barbara Erskine (thank goodness she does't put out many books or I'd be flat out broke!)

I love, love Stephen King, even though his books give me nightmares. I have read them all about 3 times, circulating through my entire SK library every 3-4 yrs or so.

If I know my husband is going away with work, I won't read one because I don't want to have to sleep with the light on! (Or make excuses about why I think one of the kids needs to sleep in my bed).

Hi Deb! I keep telling myself I should read more Lehane. Loved the complexities of Mystic River; must read more. And Harlan Corben; loved The Woods. So many fine authors, so little time.

Yvonne, I knew about the LH and KH and BE obsession, but didn't realise you were a fellow LG fan. I don't think I have read anything by Erskine. ANOTHER author to check out...

Kirsty, I am not brave enough to read SK. Even with others in the house. Saw a trailer to The Mist on Pay TV yesterday and said to my husband, now there's a movie I am NOT watching!

Linda Howard has written books with storylines that I normally wouldn't want to read like Cry No More about a woman whose baby was kidnapped from her.
